+ 1st Week in Lent

The Word of God is as relentless as the rain.

Readings: Isaiah 55:10-11 Matt 6:7-15

As the rain and snow come down from the heavens and do not return without watering the earth making it yield and giving growth to provide seed for the sower and bread for the eating, so the word that goes from my mouth does not return to me empty, without carrying out my will and succeeding in what it was sent to do.” [Isaiah 55:10-11]

Though every few years we get hit with monsoon type rains and fierce nor-easterly blizzards or periodic droughts, we New Jerseyites can count on a moderate amount of snow and rain in season. Nature has its will to power and occasionally overpowers us with much more than we prayed for.

Nevertheless, snow and rain are excellent metaphors for God’s Word and God’s grace. Isaiah was wise to make the analogy despite the obvious inadequacies of its potential for destruction.

Meteorologists are reasonably good at predicting rain and snow but they cannot prevent it from happening. Day or night, weather patterns are persistent. Farmers count on weather patterns and we all know that a dehydrated earth yields no fruit.

We need to include God’s word in our daily diet. Jesus is the ‘living Word’ that can yield a rich harvest in our soul that can bear fruit in good works. Whether we are awake or asleep, God’s grace is relentless The Hound of Heaven will pursue us until we succumb to goodness and Godness.

Lent is the ideal time to till the soil and raise to consciousness, God’s abiding presence.
