+ 23rd Week in Ordinary Time

The way of the Lord.

Readings: I Timothy 1:15-17 Psalm 113:1-7 Luke 6:43-49

But for that reason I was mercifully treated, so that in me, as the foremost, Christ Jesus might display all his patience as an example for those who would come to believe in him for everlasting life. [I Timothy 1:16]

There is little doubt about the need for justice in our world and even in our Church. But justice appears more elusive than ever and is overshadowed by the desire for vengeance.

The Jewish feast of atonement, Yon Kippur, will take place this year on September 27th, one week from tomorrow. “Yom Kippur atones only for sins between man and G-d, not for sins against another person. To atone for sins against another person, you must first seek reconciliation with that person, righting the wrongs you committed against them if possible. That must all be done before Yom Kippur.” Yon Kippur.

Paul was deeply aware of his sinful past and in his letter to Timothy testifies to his need for mercy.

I wonder if in our pursuit of justice, we might not instead use mercy rather than vengeance as a way to pave a path to peace and reconciliation that in turn might lead to justice. It appears to be the way of the Lord.

Yes, atonement is a necessary step in the process. Paul admitted his own complicity in wrongdoing but no one of us is guiltless and lacking in complicity at some level.

The outburst of the senator from South Carolina during the president’s address to Congress on Wednesday was met with a gentle acknowledgment of forgiveness by the president.

Perhaps we need to declare a year of atonement for our nation and for our Church with the hope that somehow, it may yield an era of justice and mercy for our world.
