+ First Week in Advent

It’s time to get up!

”You know the time has come: you must wake up now; our salvation is even nearer than it was when we first heard the good news.” [Romans 13:11]

I grew up in an old three-story house not counting the cellar and the attic. Situated on a hillside, the front of the house was two stories and the rear was four! It was quite a steep hill. My mother used to refer to it as the original split-level house.

At any rate, the kitchen was below ground level, two stories below the bedrooms. So, when it was time to get up in the morning, my mom or dad would knock on the appropriate pipe that led to my bedroom. If I didn’t hear the ‘knock,’ then my mom would call up the stairs, “It’s time to get up!”

Kids rarely like to get up. Does anyone like to get up in the morning? But once we get our feet on the ground after a shower and a good cup of coffee, the day begins to look better and better.

The first Sunday in Advent is our first ‘wake-up call’ into a new day or better, into a new season. The Scriptures provide a great selection of reflections for ‘table talk’ both at the Eucharist Table and at our family table. It’s a season of grace and opportunity. It’s a new year for Christians, an opportunity for a fresh start.

Advent can be a built-in retreat for sojourners serious about discipleship with the Lord.

Happy New Year!
