+ 2nd Week in Advent

Clean and clear is the justice of God!

Readings: Isaiah 11:1-10; Matt 10:21-24

“Justice shall flourish in his time and fullness of peace forever.” [Psalm 71:7]

Recently I had the opportunity to hear an ‘expert’ attorney present his case before the NJ Supreme Court. He was not only knowledgeable about the law, but he had the facts of his case at the tip of his tongue as he calmly delivered his carefully blended argument. At the conclusion of his presentation I had all I could do to hold myself back from applause. Though the judgment has yet to be made by the judges, I predict he will win his case and cause for justice. He was “clean and clear.” Because he spoke with integrity, I believe the judges will judge with equity.

The readings for Tuesday of the second week in Advent are about God’s administration of justice. Integrity is paramount in the sight of God. His judgments are equitable for all people and for all time, for rich and for poor, in season and out of season.

Jesus is the ‘judgment’ of God in human form who brings justice to the nations, mercy to all people. In him justice and mercy meet.

Integrity is the umbrella virtue that balances justice and equity. It must be the hallmark of every Christian.
