Twenty-Seventh Week C

Friday October 8, 2004

Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004 – 27th Week in Ordinary Time

We have been freed from the law. “…Before faith came, we were allowed no freedom by the Law;… the Law was our guardian until Christ came and we could be justified by faith “ [Galatians 3:24-25]

But Jesus said that he did not come to do away with the Law but to bring it to fulfillment. Once again, Paul overstates the point to make the point. In a perfect world, we would not need rules and regulations. We would do the right thing instinctively. However, although we are saved we are not completely free because we still slip back into our old way of thinking and so we need to fall back on the rules. When the going gets rough in marriage or even in a religious community, we need to fall back on the covenant and the promises we made when we first committed ourselves to our spouse or to our community. However, if we stay rooted in Christ, we become more aware of the abundant graces that can empower us to faithfulness. It’s a daily decision and a daily effort.
